All information you find on the Obese Release Asia website was done through vigorous research, but I also include my own opinions and experience on any discussed topic. My opinion may differ from your opinion. Keep this in mind. Obesity can very simply be described as being severely overweight and having a high body mass index (BMI) score. The definition below is from the World Health Organization:
“Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. A body mass index (BMI) over 25 is considered overweight, and over 30 is obese.”
In my own opinion, simply using the BMI chart is not 100% accurate, since there are many individuals who may appear to have an ‘obese’ weight, but they may simply have a heavier bone structure or significant muscle mass. For example, even when I was very healthy and fit in my youth, I was around 85kg – 90kg at a height of 172cm, which would be a BMI score of between 30 – 32 (Class 1 Obese). However, the BMI numbers would be generally valid for the vast majority of people out there despite these minor exceptions.
I would personally include that in order to really be obese, you would need a high to very high body fat percentage (e.g. 30%+ - 40%+). While not everyone knows how to measure their body fat percentage, it is pretty clear if you simply look in the mirror. One thing to remember is that men in general have lower body fat percentages than women. The way a man’s body looks, will be different to a woman’s body who has the same body fat percentage. I personally feel that using a body fat percentage guide in additional to the BMI chart, really helps us to figure out if we are obese, or how obese we really are.
